Helping save kids' lives through raising awareness and educating families and communities on the dangers of Inhalant Abuse. Other active program is Disease Prevention.

Human Interest Story

Inhalant abuse has profoundly affected my life and that of my only child, my beloved son Michael. Michael died last March of what he and his friends called "huffing."

Michael's inhalants of choice were air fresheners and gasoline. However, there are many other products he tried. His spiral downward, despite all a mother's love and devotion could do, continued. He died of sudden sniffing death syndrome the night before he was to have entered a rehabilitation facility.

Michael died after months of inhalant abuse. Most parents and children do not know that death can occur during the first inhalant experience. Michael's ability to dodge this bullet reinforced his -- and every other teen's -- feeling of immortality.

I urge all parents to learn from this experience. You must be vigilant and involved 24-7.

Since most parents do not know about inhalant abuse, I am grateful to the Alliance for Consumer Education for creating a program to educate parents about this important issue.

Use this tragedy as the motivation you need to talk to your child about inhalants and visit www.Inhalant.org. The loss of a child to inhalants is something I will never understand. Learn from my loss.
